Activities That Bring Comfort

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

There are certain activities in life that bring comfort. Things that make us feel good, bring a smile to our face, and help us forget about what might be hurting a little. I’m talking about things like a cup of hot chocolate on a snowy morning, roasted marshmallows cooked over a campfire, a nice deep bubble bath, or a good book to read in front of a fireplace. Children can enjoy these activities as well as adults, and keeping good books for kids available helps to cultivate a joy and comfort in reading. Books like Orange Down Under and other fun, exciting, and educational books can be a great way to help your kids relax, enjoy having quiet time, and learn something while they’re at it. So bring on the comfort foods, the warm fireplace, and a collection of good books. Your kids will enjoy the quiet activities and learn to appreciate the comfort.

Introduce Your Characters the Right Way

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Did you know that the first time you introduce your character and your novel, you should be aware of giving them some immediate distinguishable features. There are many other helpful tips out there. You should download many different reference materials onto your Barnes & Noble Nook e-book reader. This way you can work on your computer and browse through these e-books very quickly after you take it out of its Nookcolor cover case. It is a bit difficult to write a novel especially if you are not used to the writing habit. You should establish a daily word minimum for each and every day. Many people recommend that you can easily start off with a minimum of 100 words a day than slowly increase that as much as you can after that. There are writers out there who publish free full length novels in one year. That is many thousands words a day.

Letters by Van Gogh

Monday, February 28th, 2011

I managed to find some letters published that Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo during his life. The letters were like a diary of his life from his early days of trying to become a pastor all the way to his suicide in 1890. I knew little or nothing about these painters’ personal circumstances until this point. Before if I had heard the name Vincent van Gogh my mind would of registered oh yes the famous painter without any other detail. I should imagine this speaks volumes of the level of knowledge I had before I started to study canadian artists and other famous painters.

I was extremely surprised at the tormented and isolated life that this man led. Sometimes it is easy to think that most of these highly regarded artists come from wealthy privileged backgrounds were with moderate commitment, success would be all but guaranteed. Even though Vincent van Gogh did receive financial assistance from his family during his career, it was obvious that he suffered from some sort of mental illnesses, which I can only assume, that made life extremely difficult indeed. From what I read Vincent van Gogh had admiration and respect for nature, I like the fact that he was a humble man who painted simple things, or a humble way of life. I think he found solitude and peace through painting, which unfortunately gave out in the end. I do not know if he ever knew his own success, very sad indeed.

On the other hand accross the pond other Canadian painters like artist william brymner on review seemed like a different kettle of fish altogether. Looking at his biography it looked like he could turn his hand to anything he fancied. During his life he was a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, but his focus was as a painter. I read that he started out studying law, and one-day, his mother gave him some art supplies, which inspired him to become an artist, which deeply disappointed his father apparently. Brymner was deeply influenced by some of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh. He also spent some time in London studying the paintings of Turner.
